You make some great points, Mike. I work for a nonprofit that seeks and honors Top Small Company Workplaces, with the emphasis being on the best people practices (a few of these have been union firms). I would imagine that the CEOs of our honored firms are on the whole laughing at the idea of a CEO a large company, like the ones on "Undercover Boss," needing to go incognito to truly understand what his/her front line workers experience every day. The organizations we honor and endorse, even if they're on the larger side with more than 750 employees, have built practices into their work culture designed to always have a pulse on what the typical worker is thinking -- and better yet, mechanims to solicit their good ideas and act of them to better satisfy the customer.

Along the lines of what you wrote here, I thought you'd get a kick out of business coach Wally Bock's take on this show: http://bit.ly/9gqLxi I certainly did!
